Useless rebellion

Time for something not political. Ok, well you could attach it to something political but that’s not my intent today. Today, I’m talking about rebellion, sticking it to the man, etc.

I love punk rock, I love the non-conformity and just being different. However, my biggest problem are the people who just rebel for the sake of rebelling and never do anything worthwhile with it. Walk past any show and you’ll see kids anywhere from 13 all the way to their early 20s who just rolled out of their parent’s BMW somehow without messing up their 2 foot long mohawk, Foursquaring their location to their friends on their Iphone. It’s as if they’re trying to rebel against the system, but certainly without leaving the comfort and support of it. I can’t stand the gutter punks either. You know, the ones that look like they’re homeless and some of them probably are. It’s as if they have no pride, no self worth.

My guess is that eventually, most assimilate back into the system once they realize that eventually their parents won’t be alive to support them forever or that squatting in abandoned buildings isn’t as fun as it was back when you were 18. Rebellion is wonderful, you just got to learn to channel it into something worthwhile. You say you hate the politicians but you don’t vote? Think of any injustice you complain about, but what have you done to fix it? I leave you with this video with the song “Big Punk”. Enjoy.

  1. This one is funny. I love how folks like this think that dressing a certain way makes them an individual. They are so set on being different that they end up being the same. Why? Every segment of society has a "uniform" that is accepted, whether it is the punk, emo, Gangsters etc. Step out side of that and you had better be the BIGGEST trend setter ever or you are going to be mocked by the other rebels, because they don't want you to rebel against them. But really, isn't this indeed at the heart of political correctness. You are just fine being different as long as you are just like me? Become a real individual like Manny is trying to be and you will by nature find a fairly short friend list and live sort of lonely. There are sacrifices to bucking the system for real. Some are indeed worth making. Plowing new ground is HARD. Going back over the same stuff that has been plowed for years has all of the bugs and kinks worked out. So keep on bucking if you have the cajones to stand up to the critique.
