The Politics of Cashing Out: Why Some Black Celebrities Support Trump

Kanye West came out supporting Trump. This was absolutely no surprise to me, because Kanye West will do anything and everything to keep his name in the news. As the old saying goes, bad press is better than none at all.

Kanye West isn’t the only black celebrity to support Trump. There are also people like former Florida congressman Allen West who did a motorcycle ride photo-op with my local white nationalist congressman Clay Higgins recently.

Higgins has a history of white nationalist, anti-black dog whistles, and is rumored to have worked for David Duke’s gubernatorial campaign back in 1991. You would think that no self-respecting person of color would have anything to do with him, or Trump, but money is often more attractive than decency.

The black sisters Diamond and Silk also testified before Congress, claiming that Facebook was censoring conservative voices, while lying under oath about receiving money from Trump’s campaign in 2016.

The conservative social media personalities known as Diamond and Silk claimed under oath at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday that they were never paid for their consulting work by President Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Federal campaign finance filings show otherwise.

“We have never been paid by the Trump campaign,” Lynette Hardaway, who goes by Diamond, told Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas).

Filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) show that the campaign paid the duo $1,275 on Nov. 22, 2016, for “field consulting.” (The Hill)

The other part that didn’t draw as much attention was the fact that Diamond and Silk were also paid by a white nationalist by the name of Paul Nehlen, a Neo-Nazi who is running as a Republican to replace Paul Ryan in Congress. He’s also banned from Twitter because of his racist speech.

Given the right price, social media celebrities like Diamond and Silk can be bought for 30 pieces of silver to support actual Nazis.

Then there is all the free publicity, ad revenue, and adoration from white conservatives who see these women as proof that they aren’t racists themselves.

Martin Luther King Jr would spin in his grave if he could see this now.
