My post on Jill Stein pissed off some of you the other day, and I understand that. She seemed to offer a Hail Mary recount that could rid the country of possibly the worst president we will ever have. So before I get into the latest stunts she and the Green Party have pulled, let me explain a few things.
I would love nothing more than to see Herr Cheeto Satan dethroned. As an accountant, I’m not opposed to audits; I especially think they are great when I don’t have to participate in them! But if people are going to open their checkbooks, they deserve to have all…ALL of the information. I am not going to exist in an echo chamber where I only consume news I want to hear, that agrees with my point of view. And I am not going to write that way, either. I am a realist, y’all. And realistically, this recount is the longest long shot in the history of long shots.
Unfortunately, Stein has done nothing to allay my concerns. In fact, she and the Green Party have actually caused my bullshit detector to go into overdrive.
Yesterday, the Clinton campaign announced they would participate in Wisconsin’s recount, despite not believing it will affect the ultimate outcome of the election. Marc Elias, Clinton’s attorney, also stated they would do the same in any other states where a successful petition led to an audit or recount. Jill Stein went on Twitter and made this statement:
Why would Hillary Clinton—who conceded the election to Donald Trump—want #Recount2016? You cannot be on-again, off-again about democracy.
— Dr. Jill Stein (@DrJillStein) November 26, 2016
What the hell? Elias made himself very clear:
Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves, but now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides. If Jill Stein follows through as she has promised and pursues recounts in Pennsylvania and Michigan, we will take the same approach in those states as well. We do so fully aware that the number of votes separating Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in the closest of these states — Michigan — well exceeds the largest margin ever overcome in a recount. But regardless of the potential to change the outcome in any of the states, we feel it is important, on principle, to ensure our campaign is legally represented in any court proceedings and represented on the ground in order to monitor the recount process itself.
Furthermore, the issue of excess donations has come up again, and again the story has changed. Per CBS News, George Martin, a member of the Wisconsin Green Party’s coordinating council, has now stated excess money will not be used for election integrity reform, but instead for the Green Party itself.
If there is extra money in the donation fund — or if Stein’s petition fails to pass muster with the election commissions in any of the states — Martin promised that the money will be used to fund the Green party’s local “campaign schools,” meant to groom local candidates for public service.
“As a national party, our commitment is to build at the local level,” Martin said. “That’s where these dollars and excess dollars will go.”
If I were determined to make people comfortable my intentions were pure and honorable, and if I were asking for their money, this is not the way I would be acting.
